What is a DVR ?

DVR stands for Digital Video Recorder. Digital video is faster and easier to manage than non-digital/analog systems. It also offers instant access to recorded or live video. Storage is easier than with analog because the volume of video that can be stored on a single disc far outweighs that which can be stored on a tape. Add to that the quality of the images digital video produces and the fact that the quality doesn't diminish over time, you have a system that will give you reliable video data when you need it. The quality of the recording also provides for greater admissibility in courtroom situations. A single disc can take the place of over 30 VCR tapes which mean’s storing days’ instead of months' worth of video recordings.

What types of DVR’s are there ?

  1. PC based DVR
  2. Stand Alone DVR

What is a PC based DVR ?

A PC-based DVR is a DVR built like a computer. It consists of either a tower or a rack mount. Inside you have a Mother Board, Network Card, Video Card, CPU, Hard Drive and Memory. The DVR Video Card and the DVR software is what allow for remote access.

What is a Stand-alone DVR ?

A stand alone DVR is an all in one DVR unit. It consists of a cabinet (like a VCR) but inside has all the components of a PC. A Mother Board, Network Card, Video Card, CPU and Hard Drive. All DVR related components are built on one board.

What is the difference between a PC based DVR and a Stand-alone DVR ?

Because stand alone DVR's are built completely on just one circuit board, they are more reliable and easy to use. There are no conflicts or system crashes because all the hardware and software are embedded all on one board. PC-Based DVR's give you more advanced features, and they are expandable. They have more Speed by way of their bigger CPUs and memory. You can easily add Hard Drives, DVD burners and CD-Burners. If advanced viewing, playback and video file saving over the internet is important; you may wish to consider a PC-Based DVR. If reliability and stability is important to you; you may wish to consider a Stand Alone DVR.
